Against The Governor’s Sexist Texts, The Cops Of Puerto Rico Clashes With The Protesters
1000’s of protesters in Puerto Rico have clashed with riot police, as volleys of teargas and rubber bullets had been used to disperse a mostly peaceful protest that descended into chaos simply yards from the governor’s residence in San Juan.
The capital has seen days of sustained protest following a leak of thousands of pages of textual content messages, many together with homophobic and misogynistic slurs, between the Puerto Rico governor, Ricardo Rosselló, and 11 members of his internal circle. Numerous folks in Rosselló’s administration have given up after the leak. However, the governor has refused to tender his resignation regardless of continuing violence on the streets.
Wednesday’s protest started peacefully with an enormous rally outside the Capitol building that tens of 1000’s attended. A few of the island’s most well-known artists addressed the group from a makeshift stage on top of a white pickup truck.
The singer Ricky Martin, the topic of homophobic abuse in a number of the leaked messages, made a brief speech, telling reporters: “We’re bored with the cynicism. The reggaeton star Bad Bunny stood on top of a speaker system waving the Puerto Rican flag and holding a sign that stated “Ricky [Rosselló] resign” in Spanish. The actor Benicio del Toro also attended the rally.
